TUMBLE down buildings in Brunswick Street, Teignmouth, could be demolished in tidy-up plans by Teignbridge Council. The site of former Curwell Windows, Bobbets Garage and flats above are labelled dangerous and should be pulled down, despite being in a conservation area. It could be replaced by a 2.6 metre high perimeter cream-block wall with secure timber gates and period detailing to create storage. The stone building on to Osmonds Lane will be retained with new windows. The site has come in for criticism for pulling down the overall look of the area. Discussions about redevelopment were last held in 2005. They were put on hold when the Environment Agency pulled out of a flood scheme amid widespread opposition. Town and district councillor Sylvia Russell said that people would no doubt prefer a temporary measure to what exists but further questions need to be asked. 'What is it going to be used for? If it's storage, how much revenue will that create and would we be better off opening it for car parking, which we have a shortage of here?' she said. Cllr Russell said she would bring it to the town council's next finance and general purposes committee. The plans will be discussed at the planning committee next Friday.
