An Abbotskerswell woman told this week how her family was caught up in riots which saw Manchester city centre ripped apart by looters on Tuesday evening.

Louise Houghton had travelled to Manchester with her husband Pete and two children Lana, 14, and Dan, 12, visiting friends and family when the violence erupted.

Mrs Houghton had enjoyed a meal in China Town with more family members at 7.30pm.

When they left the restaurant they saw a car with a window smashed but did not realise the riots had spread to Manchester, so decided to go for a farewell drink.

'We went into the Grey Horse Inn in Portland Street and we were told that they were shutting up because of troubles,' said Mrs Houghton.
