CONCERNED Chudleigh councillors have called on Teignbridge Council to reconsider banning motorhome owners from parking in the town’s car park.
In March, the district authority decided to turf the vehicles out of its car park because they were too big and too heavy – despite paying more than £200 a year for the privilege.
A 14-day eviction period was set and after seven years of parking they were booted out.
Now the annoyed Chudleigh members have outlined their concerns, which include the current hazardous parking in the town and the lack of consultation with them from Teignbridge.
The letter reads: ‘We are concerned at the lack of consultation with the town council.
‘Had we been alerted to this measure we could have consulted with those affected and given Teignbridge patterns of usage and circumstances relation to individuals.
‘Regarding the size of the motorhomes, we would simply point out that oversized vehicles frequently park in the car park.
‘Would it be possible to mark out a small number of camper van spaces?
‘This would avoid on-street parking which is already a hazard in Chudleigh.
‘We hope that some compromise could be considered by the council’s car park review committee.’
One resident who was often out and about in the summer in his van even offered the council some £420 a year to continue parking – but his offer was rejected.
A Teignbridge spokesman said: ‘We are grateful to Chudleigh Town Council for getting in touch with us and are considering the council’s request and looking at the options.
‘As soon as this has been done, we will let the town council know of the outcomes.’
