FIREFIGHTERS were called to Russel House in Newton Abbot’s East Street yesterday (May 6) after reports of a cooker fire.

Two engines from the town were sent to the scene at around 6.13pm.

A careline reported the incident which took place on the first floor of the three storey sheltered accommodation.

Upon arrival the crews located a small fire involving a microwave oven in the flat which was heavily smoke logged.

The elderly woman who occupied the flat was assisted out to safety, where she was given oxygen therapy, before firefighters extinguished the fire.

The damage was confined to the microwave and food only.

Once the fire was out, the occupant was left in the hands of paramedics.
