DEVON and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service is reminding the public to stay safe around bonfire night by avoiding bonfires and fireworks at home.
The safest way to enjoy bonfire night is to attend an organised display, they say. Home bonfires and fireworks can cause incidents and injury, putting pressure on the emergency services.
Ros Clarke, group manager for prevention, said: ‘Bonfire night and the days surrounding it are notoriously busy for us, and also our emergency service colleagues.
‘We are asking the public to be considerate of others when it comes to bonfires and fireworks. For many people, and animals, fireworks can be frightening.
‘The safest way to enjoy bonfire night is to go to an organised professional bonfire night event.
‘If you are unable to attend an organised display, keep bonfires or fireworks small, and appropriate size for the area.
‘Never leave bonfires unattended and make sure you have a source of water such as a bucket or hose nearby for both the bonfire and any fireworks.’
