NEWTON Abbot Rotarians have thrown down a red hot fundraising challenge that could see up to 100 people fire walking for charity.

The daredevil stunt is due to take place at Buckland Athletic FC on Friday, March 18, with places already being snapped up.

Martin Smith, from Rotary, said: ‘You could say they are going like hot cakes.

‘This is a professionally organised event by UK Fire Walk and it’s run by Guinness World Record holder Scott Bell.

‘We have room for up to 100 people to take part and having completed a fire walk myself I can promise, but don’t ask me how, it doesn’t hurt.

‘It takes some nerves to look at that line of hot coals and then believe you can cross it, barefoot of course.

‘It’s a fantastic experience though and one that leaves you with a terrific high.’

Among those who are preparing to take on the challenge is Kay Yendall, manager of the Newton Abbot Community Transport Association.

She said: ‘Martin asked me if I was up for it and with a significant birthday coming this year I thought why the heck not.

‘I know that charities will also be having stalls and, appropriately, a barbecue too.

‘It’s going to be a red hot party.’

The fire walk is due to start at 7.30pm and participants need to be at the football club at 5.30pm.

Other teams taking part in the event include Hits (Homeless in Teignbridge Support), the Courtenay Centre, Firewatch, Mantracom, System6 Kitchens and Meadowside, with more coming in.
