IF you’ve got a broken toaster, a blocked hoover or a pair of jeans that need a new zip, don’t throw them out, take them to Bovey and Heathfield Repair Cafe and get them fixed.
The team are holding their first session on Saturday, June 25, from 9.30am to 12.30pm in Bovey Tracey Methodist Church Hall. After that they’ll be holding them on the third Saturday of each month.
The cafe has been funded by Bovey Tracey Town Council with additional funding from two local Teignbridge councillors.
Louise Lee-Gammage, group chairperson, said: ‘By promoting repairs, Bovey and Heathfield Repair Cafe wants to help reduce mountains of waste from our local landfill.
‘We all know how important this is. We throw away a frightening amount of stuff in the UK. Even things which have very little wrong with them, and which could easily be used again after a simple repair.
‘Unfortunately, many people have forgotten that they can have things repaired and small repairs are often not worthwhile for professionals. Repair Cafe wants to change all that, keep stuff out of the landfill and share repairing knowledge more widely.’
If you have a particular repair skill, the Bovey Repair Cafe would love to hear from you. You don’t need to be a professional, just competent and experienced.
They can be contacted at [email protected] where they promise a warm welcome to the group or go along to their repairers’ meeting on May 21 at 10am at the Methodist Church hall, to find out more.
