A FORMER care home in Newton Abbot could be converted into a house of multiple occupancy (HMO) as a planning application is submitted to Teignbridge.
25/01014/FUL is seeking permission to convert part of Dunmore Residential Care Home into a HMO.
The application proposes turning the western part of the Courtenay Road building into 12 co-living, non self-contained units set across three floors, each benefitting from a communal kitchen.
The rooms will be offered as a mix of ensuite studios or bedrooms with shared bathroom and shower room facilities; the rooms will be rented as single occupancy on a furnished basis and targeted to professionals and key workers.
The application also proposes to create two self contained flats on the lower ground floor.
It includes an area for refuse and recycle storage, as well as secure cycle storage.
Teignbridge District Council’s planning portal gives August 5 as a deadline for a decision on the application.
‘The use of the site to create two small self contained flats together with an HMO, for which there is a growing need, is therefore considered to be entirely appropriate and given the site context, it is important that the fullest possible use be made of the opportunity which the proposed development presents’ the planning statement says.
It is not proposed to undertake any external alterations to the building other than necessary maintenance and repair, the Mid-Devon Advertiser understands.
The former care home has two separate title deeds due to it being set across two properties - number 28 and 30 Courtenay Road.
25/01014/FUL relates to 30 Courtenay Road, whereas 25/01012/FUL relates to 28 Courtenay Road.
The latter is seeking permission to covert the other half of the former care home into 14 rooms.
