A second bid to bring a £5.5million hotel and restaurant complex to Newton Abbot Racecourse has been launched.

Leisure industry giants Whitbread and Newton Abbot Races Ltd have submitted a fresh planning application after being refused permission for a 60-room Premier Inn and Beefeater restaurant in June.

They said the revised scheme took into account the reasons why their first attempt was unsuccessful. They included the contemporary design and siting of the two proposed buildings which planning officers at Teignbridge Council said would conflict with the 'character of the site and its surroundings'.

They also believed the buildings 'would neither preserve nor enhance the character and appearance of the area' and had concerns about safe access for vehicles and pedestrians and the lack of an agreement on how to control the expected increase in pollution resulting from extra traffic.
