THE newly-formed Friends of Newton Abbot Library has held its first annual meeting.

At the meeting, the group – set up to support and promote local library services – established its constitution and sought the views of the community in regards to future events at the library.

The friends group will start to raise money and work with the Passmore Edwards Centre’s manager, Cheryl Marshall, to promote and support upcoming events.

Carole Phillips, vice-chairman of the group, said: ‘These are exciting times as we work to enhance the current services and make our library a real community hub.

‘There are already excellent facilities and dedicated staff at the Passmore Edwards Centre and we will be raising funds and adding fresh and new ideas.

‘We will be publishing a programme of events, which will include a world book night, a summer wine tasting and poetry evening.’

The group has arranged a police surgery in the library’s coffee shop at which the public will be able to meet a police officer in an informal setting and discuss any issues.

The next police surgery will be from 11am until noon on Tuesday.
