A SPORTS student from the University of Worcester has received an England cap to mark the eight times he has represented his country in the game of Futsal.

Shane Gill, 21, of Newton Abbot, played at the World 5's Futsal Tournament last year in Kuala Lumpur.

A five-a-side game, it is supported by FIFA and UEFA, and is played with a heavier and smaller version of a normal football and is viewed on the world stage as a way to improve creativity, dribbling, close ball control and passing techniques.

While the game is relatively new to Britain, it has a massive following across the world, with hotbeds in Brazil, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

It is credited with developing the skills and talents of world class footballers such as Portugal's Luis Figo and Ronaldo and Brazilians Ronaldinho, Robinho and Roberto Carlos, who were all involved in the game from an early age.

Gill, who is nearing the completion of his sports studies and sociology degree at the university, said it was fantastic to receive an England cap.

'I loved playing for my country and hope that I can get selected again in September,' he said.

He also plays futsal for Great Britain Universities and 11-a-side football for England Universities.
