A GARAGE was completely destroyed and a person rescued in a fire at Buckland this afternoon, Thursday.

Both fire appliances from Newton Abbot and one from Torquay were called in to deal with the blaze in the Buckland area.

Newton's Firefighters report: ‘On arrival, a garage adjoining a domestic property was well alight with smoke and flames issuing from the building.

‘The IC (Incident Commander) from Torquay committed a BA (breathing apparatus) team through the house with a hose reel jet into the rear garden to tackle the fire.

‘A further BA team from Newton Abbot was committed to the front of the garage using a 51mm attack jet to attack the fire.

‘While the teams were extinguishing the fire, they managed to evacuate one individual who attempted to fight the fire themselves.

‘A third team was also committed to the fire. They took with them a hose reel jet in order to back up the other teams.

‘All three teams worked well together and managed to bring the fire under control before it managed to cause significant damage to the house.

‘The occupant was checked over on scene by our ambulance service colleagues and was discharged on scene.

‘The garage was unfortunately 100% damaged by fire.’
