IT was probably warmer in the sea than out, but about 200 hardy souls who plunged into the briny at Teignmouth on Boxing Day were still shivering.
Around 3,000 spectators, wrapped up well against the sunny but cold weather, watched from the shore and the traditional event raised £2,176 for the RNLI – an 'incredible' amount, according to publicity and events organiser Roger Hawkins.
The total will be swelled when sponsorship money comes in over the next few weeks.
Another £552 came from the sale of lifeboat souvenirs and toys.
Most of the dippers were in fancy dress, and Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross gave the prize for the best individual outfit to Kelly Goodall, who was dressed as a fairy.
The team award went to a group led by Bob Mort, dressed as cave men and women.
And seven-year-old Keeley Cousins – garbed as a witch – took the children's prize.
