Walking, running, cycling, swimming or even skating – Teignmouth RNLI supporters went the distance to fundraise during the Mayday Mile challenge.

Participants signed up to complete a mile a day throughout the month, receiving donations through a fundraising page set up for them by the RNLI.

There were also collections throughout May on the seafront by Teignmouth crew members and supporters.

Teignmouth’s Mayday Mile raised a total of £4,897.98.

Junior crew members Hugo and Rowan were among those who took part.

Hugo, whose mother Rachel is a volunteer lifeboat crew member, didn’t let a trip to France disrupt his fundraising.

He said: "It was hard work when we were on our half term holiday in the South of France and it was sooooo hot but I kept going!

“I walked, ran, biked and skated my miles and I did them in Shaldon, London, Lille, Arles, Meze and Paris.

“I raised £298 in total, which I'm really pleased about as it will go to help saving people's lives at sea."

Rowan, whose father volunteers with the station's shore crew, said: "It's been a challenge to fit it in every day, but I've really enjoyed it and met lots of nice people along the way.

“Thank you to everyone who sponsored me. I'm proud to have raised £589 towards the total."

A team from Newton Abbot-based Gilpin Scrap Metals raised £1,667 towards the total, by completing the challenge and collecting donations from customers.

Wendy Richards Wood, RNLI Teignmouth Fundraising Chair, said: "Mayday Mile has been a fantastic opportunity to get out and about in our community and meet so many lovely people.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity and encouragement we've received.

“Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help support the RNLI's lifesaving work, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who has taken part or supported us."
