Tony Elliott, of Newcross Park, Kingsteignton, writes:

At long last the prospective Conservative parliamentary candidate for Newton Abbot has put her head above the parapet with a letter regarding the council tax.

Last year I wrote to her leader regarding this issue and to date have yet to receive a reply.

A two-year freeze on council tax will not pacify the majority of the large 'grey vote' in the West Country. It is a radical change to the system that they are looking for from this harsh tax imposed on the hypothetical value of their properties, and not their ability to pay this unjust imposition.

Richard Younger-Ross, MP for Teignbridge, has told me personally and in writing that 'it is the Lib Dems' party policy to abolish the council tax and replace it with a new, much fairer system'.

The Lib Dem councils here in Devon appear to fly in the face of their main party, with their ever-swingeing council tax increases year after year.

It is here at the next local council elections that this lot needs to be kicked out en masse – even moreso if Anne Marie Morris can prove here statement that 'DCC are £617 million in debt'.

This must surely call for a public inquiry, with many heads to roll at the top level.

The next local and general elections should indeed be interesting, to say the least.
