THEY did it! Kingsteignton pub pool players Graham Cuthbert and Darren Stocks have chalked up the Guinness World Record for longest continuous play.
They smashed the current record of 100 hours by playing each other for 106 hours at The Bell Inn. They broke the record at 4pm on Sunday, February 26, and continued playing until 10pm to add six hours on to it.
After four days and nights of pool, Graham, the pub’s landlord, and Darren, a property manager, were spending Monday resting in bed.
Landlady Caroline Cuthbert said: ‘They’re both zombified after all that pool, and are aching all over. Graham is walking with a stoop after leaning over a pool table for all those hours. They’re both feeling very disorientated at the moment, but they did very well for a couple of old codgers.’
Under the Guinness rules the pair were allowed just five minutes break for every hour played, for sleeping and visiting the bathroom, which they were able to bank up a little.
Both have been playing pool for more than 25 years. They were monitored by independent witnesses, on four-hourly shifts, and had to play in the true spirit of the game.
The 100-hour world record was set in 2013 in Colorado, USA. Before then it had been 70 hours. Others have tried and failed to beat the 100-hour record.
The pair have so far raised more than £6,000 for Rowcroft Hospice and are still collecting money.
