IT has been awards all around at Eastcliff Community Centre this week. The Eastcliff Community Project has been awarded a huge cash boost from the Big Lottery Fund. The £38,760 grant means the project will be able to expand during the next three years. The plan was designed by youngsters to include extra after school sessions, workshops on issues including sexual health, drug and alcohol use, housing and careers as well as professional skills training in music production, event management and an accredited volunteering scheme. Murray Pullen, music co-ordinator and youth worker, said: 'The Eastcliff Community Project is committed to working with young people. We run youth cafe sessions on Wednesday and Fridays and a successful music project. 'We are delighted to receive this grant as it will enable us to run an extra youth cafe session on Monday evenings and to expand the music project which is what the young people have asked for.' The news is seen as an endorsement of the youth work that has been undertaken at Eastcliff during past years where young people are encouraged to take ownership and influence in the running of the centre. It is the icing on the cake for the project, which has also seen awards for its eight young volunteers. Devon county councillor Chris Bray presented the team with Devon Youth Service Awards for their hard work with the community project. Dan Davis, Jeremy Southgate, Callum Thomson, Keith Rose, Trudy Gerbig, Ewan Adamson, Pippa Boult and Dan Spink have organised popular band nights, managed the coffee bar, produced art work and took on all manner of chores without which the centre would not function. Dan Davis, Jeremy Southgate, Callum Thomson and Keith Rose were also recognised in Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The committee of Eastcliff Community Project is grateful to the Teignmouth Youth Team of Devon County Council for their assistance in making these awards and also to the recipients for their invaluable help.
