TEIGNBRIDGE Council is launching a Super Clean Streets Campaign and is appealing for volunteers to take part in litter-picking events. It is organising a series of litter picks and wants to hear from anyone who feels their area or local landmark could do with a clean up. Each event will be supported by the district authority. Initially, a full-risk assessment would be undertaken on the area. Litter picking gadgets, gloves, refuse sacks and high-visibility jackets will be provided for volunteers. Facilities to remove the rubbish is also to be provided and before the start a safety talk is being given and a member of staff will be on site to offer assistance and help co-ordinate events. The council's public liability insurance will cover the litter picks, but under this policy volunteers are restricted to more than 12 years of age and under 80 years. Any volunteers should contact Tracey Fey, of Teignbridge Services, telephone 01626 215823, or by e-mail – tfey@teign bridge.gov.uk. Data on the south west supplied by local authorities to the Audit Commission showed that in 2004/05, 12 per cent of relevant land and highways in Teignbridge had combined deposits of litter and debris. In neighbouring Torbay it was 20 per cent. West Devon had the dirtiest streets, with 83 per cent assessed as having combined deposits of litter and debris, while West Wiltshire had 41 per cent.
