NEWTON Abbot Carnival could be reimagined for the 21st century with opportunities for change and new events, the outgoing chairman has said.

Former Mayor Cllr Mike Ryan has been at the helm for ‘more years than I care to remember’ and is finally to step down this autumn.

He hopes for great times ahead under a new leadership team as also moving on is his deputy, Cllr Carol Bunday, the town’s current Mayor.

With both slots up for grabs and a committee waiting in the wings, Cllr Ryan is encouraging the next generation to think differently and adapt to changing times.

He said carnivals across the country were feeling the combined ripples of pandemic, rising costs and changing audiences, but that with the right mindset the threats could be viewed as opportunities.

‘We know that people love carnival, crowds always turn out for events and particularly the procession,’ said Cllr Ryan.

‘But because we’ve done things in generally the same way for many years, doesn’t mean they have to stay that way.

‘We’ve almost a thousand followers on Facebook, I’m sure there are fans among them who have suggestions for change.

‘Come on, say what you’d like to see in future carnivals.

‘Have we got the right mix of activities, should carnival always be a week-long event?

‘Where should everything take place, who should we involve?

‘Would people like something more akin to a festival with street food and entertainers?

‘There are only two limitations, the number of people willing to get involved and the imaginations they bring with them.

‘Personally I’d love to see some of our existing groups and charities such as Rotary get more involved.

‘Come on Newton Abbot, it’s your time to shine. Let’s make carnival a truly relevant event for the current times and ensure it’s one that’s organised by the people for the people.’

The carnival AGM meeting is due to take place 6.30pm on October 24 in Newton’s Place, all welcome and no booking required.
