METAL sheeting from the fire-ravaged railway shed building in Newton Abbot took off in a gust of wind today and landed in nearby Forde Close.
No one was hurt and nothing was damaged by the fly-away remnant from the burnt-out building which was set alight on Saturday.
A fire crew was called to the scene just before 8am as a demolition team picked up the rogue sheeting and secured others vulnerable to the same fate.
Local residents gathered outside to complain to the workers about the imminent demolition of the half-destroyed Victorian redbrick structure.
A fire spokesman said this afternoon: ‘Fortunately no one was hurt when the sheeting took off and landed nearby. No cars were damaged either.’
Five teenagers were arrested on suspicion of starting the fire at the proposed Aldi supermarket site which raged for 24 hours – and was only completely extinguished after 48 hours.
All five have been released pending further investigations. Three are aged 15 and two just 14.
