A best-selling author is giving expert advice on how to live in the late 17th century at a talk in Moretonhampstead tomorrow, May 23.

Dr Ian Mortimer will give the guidance in his talk ‘The Time Traveller’s Guide to Restoration Britain’ at Moretonhampstead Parish Church, at 7.30pm.

A spokesman for the talk said: ‘If you could travel back in time, the period from 1660 to 1700 would make one of the most exciting destinations in history.

‘It’s the age of Samuel Pepys; plague and fire in London; bawdy comedy; and the libertine court of Charles II. The civil wars are over and a magnificent new era has begun.

‘But where would you stay and what would you eat? How much should you pay for one of those elaborate wigs? Should you trust a physician who advises you to drink fresh cow’s urine to cure your gout? Why are boys made to smoke in school? And why are you unlikely to get a fair trial in court?

‘Dr Ian Mortimer will give you some expert guidance in his talk.’

There’s a charge on the door. All proceeds will go to the upkeep of the local archives that can be viewed at www.moretonarchives.org.uk
