A fresh attempt to build on one of Newton Abbot's best-loved views has prompted fierce opposition.

Anthony Rew, of Wolborough Barton Farm, has applied to Teignbridge Council to build two five-bed detached houses on land near St Mary's Church, known as Church Fields.

The regional chairman of the national Farmers Union wants outline approval for access, appearance, layout and scale. And yesterday he stressed any building would not affect people's enjoyment of the field.

In May last year, an application for five 'eco' homes on the same site was withdrawn in face of stiff opposition.

Previous applications on the site, within a conservation area, date back to the 1950s.
