A Newton Abbot golf course is to be replaced with 650 homes and business units.

The decision has angered those who say such projects should only be considered once the district's Core Strategy masterplanning document is signed off next year.

They fear Teignbridge being left with extra homes and traffic but not new roads and other infrastructure.

On Monday, members of Teignbridge Council planning committee voted through the scheme for Hele Park, Ashburton Road, submitted by the Commercial Estates Group Ltd.

Ward member Cllr Anne Fry described the application as 'premature' and said: 'Saying yes at this stage will not be to the benefit of Newton Abbot.'
