Steve and Wendy Burt, of Blenheim Close, Newton Abbot, write:
Our house backs on to the A382 on the very narrow section opposite Sandford Orleigh.
In the last 28 years we have seen the volume of traffic increase to horrendous levels, despite the opening of Jetty Marsh Road, and we now see huge lorries and endless queues of traffic trying to negotiate the Churchills roundabout, while vehicles heading towards Drumbridges accelerate past at some speed.
We have noticed a definite worsening of the situation since they started building the new houses at Mile End, and there are many more planned there.
Now Linden Homes have applied to build 228 properties at Whitehill, a few hundred yards up the road from us, with the eventual aim of 450 properties in total. They are suggesting that the residents of the new houses will be able to walk into Newton Abbot and to the schools along the A382 footpath below our house. There will also be a cycle track exiting the new estate at the bottom of the Church Path to join the A382. They have got to be joking!
Neither ourselves or our neighbours will walk along this footpath as it is so dangerous. Do we want another accident like the young schoolgirl who was injured before Christmas?
We need the promised infrastructure to support these mass developments now, not after the houses have been built, especially the improvements to the A382 and the second phase of the Jetty Marsh link road.
The decision on this development should be deferred.
