ALTHOUGH thousands of miles apart Decoration Day services were held on both sides of the Atlantic on Sunday to honour and remember British and Canadian servicemen killed at war.Alongside the war graves in Newton Abbot's Wolborough Cemetery, standard bearers from the Royal British Legion, ex-forces and other organisations, provided a fitting colourful background to the service led by the RBL chaplain the Rev Bruce Porter.Poppy crosses were placed on each of the 28 graves, three of which are Canadian.Newton Abbot Town Band accompanied the hymns, and cornet player Raymond Wilson played the Last Post and Reveille.Also attending the service was the chairman of Teignbridge Council, Cllr Sylvia Russell, the mayor of Newton Abbot, Cllr David Howe, and the chairman of Devon Royal British Legion, Brian Cumming.In Medicine Hat, Canada – Newton Abbot RBL is twinned with the Royal Canadian Legion there – a Decoration Day service was held at the cemetery where there are around 100 graves of British servicemen killed in Canada while training during the second world war.
