THE mother of Hope North, a disabled Newton Abbot girl who was denied free transport to her chosen school because it was 500 metres too far away, is delighted that the decision has been reversed.Devon County Council were only prepared to provide 12-year-old Hope, from Buckland, with a free taxi if she went to Newton Abbot College, despite teachers, carers and her family spending months getting nearby Coombeshead College ready for her arrival. As a result, Hope – who suffers from a congenital malformation that affects her bowel, urinary tract and reproductive organs – was forced to walk to the nearest stop and board the bus to Coombeshead, even though her condition makes it painful and exhausting for her to exercise and use public transport. But a third appeal against the ruling took place earlier this month, with mum Tina Hicks receiving a letter on Saturday stating that they had been successful.'It's very good news – they've allowed her the transport,' said Mrs Hicks, who had ward councillor Gordon Hook representing the family at the latest hearing.'Hope's been missing a day a week at school because she was just too tired to go after getting anxious on the bus. Hopefully, she'll be able to go every day now.'I'd like to say thank you to everyone who's helped with the appeal.'
