Bovey Tracey Hospital will be closed to inpatients for two weeks from Monday while it undergoes a formal deep clean process.
The minor injury unit at the hospital will also be temporarily shut and outpatient physiotherapy services will be transferred to the Riverside Surgery, Bovey Tracey, during the work.
The clean is part of a Devon Primary Care Trust-wide programme, which has been developed to fight bugs.
Maintenance and improvement works will also be undertaken during the cleaning period.
It is due to reopen on February 2.
This plan is being implemented in addition to the normal cleaning procedures that routinely occur in these community hospitals.
It will allow for essential work to be carried out and allow the upgrading of some buildings, facilities and equipment.
By cleaning the hospital, it will help to meet the National Standards for Better Health requirements including the need to better plan to prevent hospital-acquired infections, to improve patient safety arrangements and safety and security generally as well as needing to enhance the privacy, dignity and confidentiality facilities for patients and visitors.
The programme which is seen as best practice will also create opportunities for staff to take leave, to undergo further training or be temporarily deployed to support patients in other settings, for skills development, and to gain experience in other areas too.
Assistant director of facilities, Pat McDonagh said: 'We are constantly striving to improve the quality of services that we provide for our patients, often in difficult circumstances where for example our buildings, because of their age, are not always the easiest to provide modern day services from.
We believe that undertaking the work in a planned way like this will benefit both patients and staff alike.'
