A LANDMARK Newton Abbot hotel has been sold for an undisclosed sum.

The Queens Hotel, opposite the town's railway station, was built in the 1850s and had been run for the past decade by owner Lynda Katz.

It has 24 rooms, two apartments and parking for up to ten vehicles.

But the doors were closed to paying guests last May and the property marketed through estate agent Charles Darrow.

Following the sale, for an undisclosed figure off an asking price of £750,000, the firm's director Jon Clyne said a 'major supermarket chain' had been interested, as were a number of others.

With multiple bids received, the building has been bought by an investor who has yet to reveal his intentions for the future.

Mr Clyne said: 'There has been considerable interest in the Queens Hotel and we were inundated with enquiries from all over the country.

'The hotel is an iconic building which has been a popular destination for visitors, travellers and locals for many years.

'The new buyers have not announced their intentions for the hotel but they are ambitious and forward-thinking and we do expect them to reveal their plans in the near future.'
