NEWTON Abbot is among the communities benefiting from the continued expansion of the Devon night bus service, which has now helped more than 30,000 passengers get home safely since launching in December 2023.

The scheme, delivered by Devon & Cornwall Police, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Stagecoach and partner organisations, operates on Saturday nights across key routes in Devon.

It provides a safe and affordable way home for a maximum fare of £3, supporting the region’s evening and night-time economy while aiming to reduce drink and drug driving, anti-social behaviour and serious offences, including violence against women and girls.

The service has grown significantly over the past year, with new routes introduced connecting Exeter to Cranbrook via Monkerton, and Newton Abbot to Brixham via Torquay and Paignton.

These additions sit alongside the recent return of night bus services in Cornwall, further extending the reach of the scheme across the region.

Police say the milestone of 30,000 passengers highlights the importance of providing safe and reliable transport options for people enjoying nights out.

Scheme co-ordinator Sergeant David Flynn, of Devon & Cornwall Police, said the figures demonstrate the value of the initiative.

‘We are immensely proud of the impact the night bus has had.

‘Carrying 30,000 passengers is a fantastic milestone and shows just how valuable the service is in helping people get home safely after a night out’, he said.

‘The new routes are proving popular and it’s great to see the Cornwall service back up and running.

‘We’d encourage anyone heading out on a Saturday night to make the most of this safe, affordable option’.

Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez said continued investment in the scheme reflects strong demand and positive results.

‘It is an incredible achievement that the night bus services across Devon and Cornwall have ensured 30,000 passengers have safely got to and from home’, she said.

‘Due to high passenger numbers, my office has committed to continue being the main funder of night buses where they are most needed throughout 2026.

‘This would not have been possible without the support of our local transport providers.

‘The services have contributed to a reduction in antisocial behaviour and violence as well as drink and drug drive cases’.

Peter Knight, Managing Director of Stagecoach South West, said the scheme demonstrates the value of accessible late-night transport.

‘We are delighted to have played a part in helping more than 30,000 passengers get home safely since the night bus service launched’, he said.

‘This milestone demonstrates the real value of providing affordable, reliable late-night transport for our communities.

‘The continued growth of the scheme shows there is strong demand for safe travel options after a night out’.
