AN ICONIC Dawlish Warren holiday park consisting of renovated railway carriages is up for sale with a price tag of £950,000.

Brunel Holiday Park’s converted holiday carriages, dating back to the 1950s and 1960s, have been a landmark on the Dawlish Warren coastline for more than 50 years.

The current owners bought the site at auction in 2017 for an estimated £260,000 but since then have carried out extensive renovations to five of the original eight carriages which had fallen into some disrepair.

The ‘quirky’, boutique converted carriages have attracted scores of visitors keen to experience the unique accommodation.

The park is now on the market following the two-year refurbishment with the owners ploughing a ‘significant’ investment into the site.

Reopening in 2019, despite the Covid pandemic, agents Bettesworth say future bookings are looking ‘strong’.

They say the park is believed to be the largest and ‘most impressive trainaction’ site in the UK.

The carriages were Mark One inspection carriages, dating from the 1950s and 1960s.

Named after different cities served by Great Western Railway such as Exeter, Bristol and Swansea, they were originally refurbished by British Rail apprentices in Swindon before being moved to Dawlish Warren.

Set up in 1935 by Great Western Railway for private use by railway staff and their families but was later open to the general public.

In 1985, it was sold to the Great Western Railway Staff Association who ran it until 2016 when the association struggled to fund the upkeep and restoration.
