A RATHER different toilet has been installed in a church in the heart of Dartmoor National Park.

In order to hold events like weddings and funerals, St Raphael’s Chapel has opened up a compost toilet.

The Huccaby church, nearly 150 years old, wanted to offer its visitors more than its usual Sunday service but needed to have the facility in place.

The new £6,250 WC, in a wooden cabin, relies on wood chippings and nature to treat the waste and is odourless, environmentally friendly and low maintenance.

Church warden Gillian Parker said: ‘We are very proud of our church and we felt that we had a building that deserved to be used for more than Sunday services.

‘I am extremely grateful to the Dartmoor National Park for their assistance both with the planning application and their Communities Fund for providing financial assistance.

‘We have to raise more money to make the toilet wheelchair accessible, but that will be our next challenge.’
