PAUL jelley, a one-armed cricketer who plays for Abbotskerswell, has been selected to attend the Malvern High Performance Cricket Weekend in Worcestershire later this month, at which the England selectors will be present, writes Richard Bray.
Jelley, 36, who is from Newton?Abbot, is vice-captain of both Abbotskerswell's second team and the Devon Disabled Cricket XI.
Last season he was leading batsman for the county team.
Jelley (right), who lost his left arm in an accident when he was a young boy, has been playing cricket since he was 13 years old.
He is a keen sportsman and, in the winter, plays rugby for Kingsteignton-based New Cross, having previously played for Okehampton, Newton Abbot and Teignmouth.
'The weekend will be an intensive and demanding two days of cricket,' said Jelley, who will be part of a squad of 12 who will be involved in playing Twenty20 games on the Saturday and a 40 overs per side match on the Sunday.
The current 15-man England squad will be part of the 40 plus cricketers taking part on July 16/17, meaning competition for places in the final 20-man high performance squad will be strong.
Three other members of the Devon Disabled cricket team – Mike Beer, Karl Beasant and Jayesh Bhagat – have also been selected.
