Newton Abbot Squash Club's men's and ladies' handicap tournaments also came to their conclusion with two interesting finals.
First on the courts were the ladies in a match which saw mother up against daughter – defending champion Anne Scott against Katie, 15.
Anne had the disadvantage of the crowd – and the rest of the Scott clan were rooting for the youngster – as well as having to overcome a minus 22 handicap.
Showing no signs of nerves, Katie took the first game 15-11 and then had to resist a strong challenge and late run of points from the defending champion to take the second 15-14, the winning point coming from a penalty point.
Falling two games behind proved too much of a mountain to climb as Anne never reached positive points in the third to give Katie her first senior title.
The men's final was equally as entertaining as Steve O'Donnell fought bravely to see off the challenge of Dave Brown who, despite starting on minus 37 points, took the title with a 3-0 win.
O'Donnell never had the fitness or court skills to match first teamer Brown, but played his part in a competitive final, before losing 12-15, 6-15, 10-15.
On the league front, it was quieter on the courts than usual, with just three teams in action.
There were due to be five, but Newton Abbot ladies' seconds were forced to cancel their tie with Exeter Uni as the top three strings were all unavailable, and Paignton 4 were also unable to muster five players, giving Newton's fifth team a walkover.
The action on the courts resulted in a thumping 20 points to one win for Newton Thirds when they played host to Tiverton Seconds.
Tim Dickinson, Steve Lewis, Mark Hedge and Luke Ruderham all won in three, with top string Ruderham whitewashing his opponent Simon Kingston 15-0 in the second game. Fourth string Shaun Mutton was the only player to drop a point as he beat Chris Boumphrey 3-1.
The fourths made their longest trip of the campaign one player short as visited Barnstaple minus top string Martin Hember. With no replacement the remaining four all played up and all lost as a consequence, though Harry Millyard put up a battle at one, eventually losing 2-3 to Toby Davies. Roy Darlington, Tom Reynolds and Kevin Lamacraft were all beaten in three.
Torquay ladies seconds beat Newton Abbot's first team to maintain a Torquay one-two at the top of the first division.
For Newton, newcomer Dawn Widdicombe beat Jodie Barnes 3-2 at five, though Barnes did recover from 0-2 down to take the match to a deciding fifth game. At four, Emma Thomas won her opening game with Kim Brook before losing the next three. Julie Stevens and Anne Scott, up against Jenny Osborne and Jo Barnes respectively, both pulled back from 0-2 down to take their ties to a decider but both lost in five.
The battle of the top strings also went to Torquay as Julie Knight proved too strong for Claire Simmonds, giving the home side a win by four games to one (19-8).
