There was relief for the stable of Grand National-winning jockey Jimmy Frost at Exeter races on Tuesday, when Longstone Lady broke the stables run of 47 losers.

Only five hurdles were jumped during the race, as two obstacles were not used throughout the afternoon.

Frost's stable jockey Chris Honour sent Longstone Lady ahead at the first, which was jumped after the field had actually travelled some distance, and she was not headed again.

The winner, a nine-year-old, returning at odds of 5-1, had not previously scored under rules, though she did win a point-to-point in 2004. There was no bid for her at the subsequent auction.

Jockey Richard Johnson and trainer Philip Hobbs teamed up to bag a double. Cousin Nicky, the 11-10 favourite secured the first leg when taking the canadatravelcentre.co.uk Novices' Steeplechase, the most valuable race on the card.

Cousin Nicky had won her chasing debut at the course two weeks before, so is now unbeaten over the larger obstacles. He was again not fluent though, and Johnson had to sit through a blunder and a mistake over the last four fences. Hobbs' charge is only five years old though, and certainly seems to have improved for the switch to fences.

Wellbeing, fifth in the 2000 Derby, completed the Hobbs-Johnson double with a ready win in the closing 17 furlong Handicap Hurdle.

The Sadler's Wells gelding, jointly owned by Lady Howard de Walden and George Strawbridge, was made the 8-11 favourite.

Johnson had his mount in last place early on, but he made up ground easily and got to the run-in with only Idian Mix to pass. The latter was still going quite well for pilot Andrew Glassonbury and looked as if he might become something extraordinary – a 66-1 winner for Martin Pipe – and the one to break the Nicholashayne maestro's long losing run to boot.

It was not to be for Pipe though, and Idian Mix had to settle for a worthy second place. The losing streak is now climbing towards 70.

Deep Pockets justified favouritism in a good Hunter Chase when winning by 14 lengths under an in-form Jamie Snowden.

The next meeting at Exeter is on Wednesday, April 5, when the first race will be at 2.30pm.

There is a meeting at Newton Abbot on Sunday, April 2, first race at 2.20pm.
