Momentum is gathering to save a 20ft chair built near Widecombe-in-the Moor.

An internet campaign was started on Facebook to make sure the giant chair remains and now more than 3,000 have signed up to support the cause.

It was built two years ago by artist Henry Bruce on private land, without planning permission.

Retrospective permission was granted with the condition that the chair was removed by March 2009.

Sam Shields, from Plymouth, who started the group on Facebook to save the sculpture, said in a statement on the site: 'Please can you invite your friends and post any pictures you take.

'Lots of locals do not know it is even there, as it is not in any tourist books.'
