PUPILS at Ashburton Primary School are learning about the rougher, tougher side of life.

Year 6 youngsters have been on the receiving end of instruction about such diverse topics as smoking, bullying, alcohol abuse and drugs use.

They are being sponsored by local housing group Westward which is responsible for some 650 homes in the Teignbridge area.

The company, with offices in Newton Abbot, provided the switched-on scholars with multiple copies of learning packs about the heavy social issues.

It has embraced the venture with the support of the Children’s Safety Education Foundation, which works with organisations such as housing associations to promote personal safety and public citizenship of children and young people.
