OPPOSITION councillors have attacked proposals by the Lib Dems to create an extra charge on new properties for their plastic bins.

Councillors clashed at the overview and scrutiny meeting on Tuesday over the impact of a new charge on low income and social housing residents.

The plan is to slap an £80 bill on all new homes to cover the order and delivery of all food waste bins, wheeled bins and recycling boxes, a cost that is ordinarily covered by council tax.

Requests were made to explore any possible avenue to pass the charge onto housing developers, a prospect that Teignbridge officers insisted was legally unfeasible.
