YOUNG campers are turning a favourite beauty spot and listed county wildlife site on the outskirts of Kingskerswell into a danger zone for walkers, pets and wildlife.

The increasing problem on Whilborough Common has been flagged up by Kingskerswell parish councillor Edward Whereat who regularly walks his boxer dog Micky there.

He was horrified when he discovered cans, litter and other debris, including broken glass, strewn over the common on Thursday last week.

It posed a danger to visitors and their pets as well as wildlife.

Cllr Whereat said a group of young men had pitched four tents and camped out on the common the previous night.

He said the four were seen at about 10.30am on Thursday leaving Kingskerswell and walking along Old Newton Road towards Newton Abbot. They were wearing black Goth-style clothes and carrying rucksacks and backpacks. The information was passed to the police.

Cllr Whereat stressed that young people were encouraged to make use of the common and downs, but everyone was saddened by an irresponsible minority who left their mess behind.

'I wish these young people would show more respect for the countryside. Why don't they leave it as they found it – a clean, safe and tranquil environment for others to enjoy,' he stated.

He urged parents who know their children are camping out will encourage them to take their litter home when they leave.
