PUPILS from Wolborough School, Newton Abbot, came out in force last week in a bid to clean up their community.
The schoolchildren joined veteran litter pickers and councillors Judy and Roger Grainger to spruce up the town.
Jenny Lovick from the school contacted the councillors after reading about the duo’s previous litter picks in this newspaper and asked if the school could get involved.
The litter-pickers met up at the town’s railway station and tackled a length of hedge – and it didn’t take long before the children were filling their bags up.
One pupil said: ‘I feel really good now because we have done something to help.’
Another added: ‘I had no idea that we would find so much rubbish.’
After the litter-pick, Jenny said: ‘At Wolborough, we love to get out into our community and help people so we have thoroughly enjoyed today.
‘We are hoping that we can get together with councillor Grainger again and carry out a large-scale litter pick to clean up the town centre,’ she added.
If any other schools or individuals want to join the pair and their growing team of volunteers get in touch via email at [email protected] or call 07922 162589.
Meanwhile, May Day celebrations continue in Newton Abbot today as teachers and pupils from Wolborough School prepare to put a smile on the faces of shoppers.
The school will march up through the town, arriving at St Leonard’s Clock Tower at 10.15am where they will set up a maypole before entertaining the crowds with some traditional country dancing.
