THE annual Newton Abbot Christmas Show embraces town and country and tomorrow it celebrates another anniversary in the market.

It is the society's 90th exhibition, though the show's history stretches back a lot further than that.

The first event was in 1899 and then held annually until the outbreak of the first world war.

In 1911 the prize money for the 13th Fat Stock Show amounted to £160 and attracted around 300 entries. It was staged in the butter market and Alexandra Hall when the president's cup for the best bullock sent from the Newton Abbot Union District was won by Mr G Sherwill, of Mamhead, with a South Devon bullock.
