SOME 50 firefighters are currently tackling a huge blaze in an abandoned warehouse in Newton Abbot.
Emergency services rushed to the Brunel Industrial Estate just after 1pm today (Sunday, October 21) after worried on-lookers raised the alarm.
The major inferno broke out in one of the area’s derelict railway sheds, which are soon to be torn down to make way for a new Aldi store.
Residents in nearby Forde Close were told to keep their windows and doors shut with motorists warned to approach the area with care.
Firefighters from Bovey Tracey, Torquay, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot, Paignton, Crediton, Middlemoor, Totnes and Brixham were drafted in to tackle the blaze.
An ariel ladder platform, hose reel jets, breathing apparatus and water bowsers were just a few of the tools used by firefighters to combat the flames.
Emergency services were called to the area at lunchtime yesterday (October 20) to a small rubbish fire in a ‘derelict building.’
The incident is still ongoing.
