PENN Inn Island is set to undergo even more improvement work, thanks to three Teignbridge Tory councillors.

After moans and groans were made about the state of the area following the construction of the South Devon Highway, Cllrs Phil Bullivant, Reg Winsor and Dennis Smith decided to take action.

The latest phase of enhancement works will be a garden area on the island which will be designed, created and looked after by local schools and those with special needs.

Discussions are under way to agree the scope of work, which areas will be developed and who will be involved.

The trio’s previous work on the area includes litter picks, arranging for paving to be repaired and forking out for a new bench.

Cllr Bullivant said: ‘As councillors we are pleased to be able to support our local communities and work to deliver improvements where we can.

‘This project is a demonstration of what can be achieved by a committed group working together and enabling a true local spirit to develop for the benefit of all.’

Newton Abbot Community Interest Company is keen to get involved with its coordinator Steve Michaels saying: ‘We have always been eager to help with local projects, especially when they help enhance the beauty and enjoyment of our surroundings.

‘The Penn Inn project looks to be such a scheme and look forward to finding a way to become involved.’
