TRAIN services in and out of Newton Abbot were disrupted after a suspected suicide on the track at Starcross today.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the scene at 10am after a driver reported the tragedy on the busy line between Newton Abbot and Exeter.

The name of the dead person has not been revealed, but HM Coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to open next week to take formal evidence of identity.

The line at Starcross is an established site for people taking their lives by throwing themselves in front of trains.

Several track deaths have been reported along the busy main line over the last few years.

A spokeswoman for BRP said: ‘Shortly after 10am today British Transport Police were called to the track close to Starcross train station following reports that a person had been hit by a train.

‘Paramedics also attended, but sadly the person was pronounced dead at the scene.’

She added: ‘The incident is not being treated as suspicious - and a file will be prepared for the coroner.’
