POLICE have appealed for witnesses after an incident in Newton Abbot left a man with what were described as 'major' head injuries.

The alarm was raised shortly after 9.10pm on Saturday with paramedics called to the taxi rank between Lloyds Bank and the rear of Market Walk.

The unconscious 35-year-old was taken by ambulance to the trauma unit at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth. His current condition is not known.

A police spokesman said officers were keen to hear from people in the area at the time, in particular three men thought to have left the scene immediately after the alleged assault. The force can be contacted on 101 quoting log number 854 of April 4.
