NEIGHBOURS in Ogwell were in shock after hearing one of their community had suffered a hand amputation at his home.

Emergency services rushed to Reynell Road just before 1.30pm on Monday amid reports of a suspected self-harming incident.

News of the grisly episode filtered through to residents who said they were saddened and upset by what had happened.

The casualty, believed to be a man in his mid-40s, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being put in an ambulance and rushed to Plymouth's Derriford Hospital.

His hand is understood to have been thrown on to a fire.
