Anyone who lives in, or is a regular visitor to, Bovey Tracey will have frequently been subject to the traffic chaos in Fore Street brought about by the frequent [and rarely policed] illegal parking and very large delivery vehicles around Union Square.

Not only is the situation inconvenient for all it is also detrimental for local businesses.

With Sainsbury's looking at the possibility of opening an outlet in the town we should look at improving our facilities for shoppers to help us all, especially our local shops which provide a varied and excellent service which the likes of a national supermarket chain cannot replace.

With the advent of Le Molay Littry Way and the A382 bypass a few years ago there is a possible option to improve the traffic flow through Bovey.

A possible proposal would be to make Fore Street one way south from Town Hall Place down to Le Molay Littry Way with the following advantages:

l This would enable many more legal parking spaces down the entire left side of Fore Street from top to bottom (one hour waiting) but with loading only bays around Union Square for large lorries in trading hours.

l Lower pollution in the town as vehicles would be going downhill.

l A free flow of traffic with fewer delays and no reversing.

There will be a few logistical problems to resolve such as bus route planning and emergency vehicle access but with Le Molay Littry Way and the A382 bypass available I am sure that that with some refinement this could be a workable option.

To improve safety for pedestrians a 20mph speed limit should also be considered for Fore Street.

There may be a few locals with objections to this idea; however I think overall there be many winners and a very few losers with this idea and overall I think this is worthy of serious consideration.MORE LETTERS IN OUR ONLINE EDITION
