Half a century of young people meeting the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award was celebrated with a tree-planting at Dyrons House, Newton Abbot, the Knowles Hill sixth form centre. With the help of award leaders from the police, fire service, Dartmoor National Park Authority, St John Ambulance and Rotary, thousands of young people between the ages of 14 and 25 have gained a bronze, silver or gold award in the past 50 years. Katy Bennie, chairman of the Teignbridge committee, said: 'The award is going from strength to strength... largely because of the efforts of our award leaders... so it is only right that they should join us in celebrating this milestone.'
