MEMBERS of Dartmoor National Park Authority agreed to spend a further £50,000 by building a replacement information centre and toilets on land behind the Lower Haytor car park. At Friday's full meeting they decided to put the centre on authority owned land behind the existing public toilets, which will be demolished, and will cost an expected £195,000. The extra money will come from the capital programme expenditure. The other option would have involved the extension and refurbishment of the toilets to include a new information centre, at a cost of around £150,000, and would have been on common land. Both the Open Spaces Society and Dartmoor Preservation Association had objected. Officer Suzanne Goodfellow said the major advantage of option one was that it was cheaper and easier to forecast how much it would cost. Because it was on common land it would require secretary of state approval and it was likely the building would be delayed. 'We would hope we would get approval. We did get secretary of state consent for surfacing the car park in the 70s,' she said. She added that while option two would cost more it did not require secretary of state approval and 'we could start moving straight away'. Now tenders will be invited for the work. Linda Bennett said she was absolutely delighted. 'I think it is so good for the Park that it can be located off the common,' she said. Earlier the development control committee approved the DNPA's retrospective application to extend the temporary condition for three years for a mobile unit used as an information centre in the lower car park. The existing consent had expired in March. Once the new centre is ready it is hoped to move the mobile unit to Newbridge where the information caravan is nearing the end of its useful life.
