MIKE Watson has been appointed the Honorary Representative of the Lord of the Manor of Bovey Tracey.

He takes over from Viv Styles who has held the post for the past year.

Mike’s nomination for the honorary position recognises the community work he has done for the town, especially helping the elderly, the lonely and isolated – a particular issue in a rural community.

As treasurer of the town’s activities trust since 2004, Bovey-based Mike has helped membership numbers grow to an impressive 430, enabling senior citizens to take part in different activities and social events.

He also finds time to act as treasurer and coordinator for the town’s thriving petanque club.

Mike said: ‘ Life is very busy but I just get on and do things as they come.

‘My wife Shirley and I have to sit down sometimes and check our diaries to see when we can meet up!’ he joked.

Previously Mike has worked as a volunteer and trainer for Age Concern and for eight years sat on the Dartmoor National Park Authority standards committee.

One person who nominated Mike said: ‘I believe he has made a major impact on the lives of many elderly folk.

‘He has done it without reward other than the satisfaction of helping people who would otherwise be isolated and lonely.’
