NEW figures released by Devon & Cornwall Police show a rise in reported offences of making off without payment across the force area, with fuel theft accounting for the majority of cases.

Data obtained through a Freedom of Information request shows that between January 1 and April 24, 2026, there were 91 recorded offences of making off without payment.

Of these, 52 involved fuel taken from petrol stations or service stations.

In the same period in 2025, there were 79 recorded offences, including 40 linked to fuel theft.

The offence of making off without payment occurs when goods or services are lawfully provided but the suspect leaves without paying, with the intention of permanently avoiding payment.

Common examples include incidents at petrol stations, restaurants or when using taxi services.
